Spanish Major Olivia Jennings shares some of her experiences while studying abroad in Barranquilla, Colombia
Spanish/Communications Major and EKU Honors student Olivia Jennings shares some of her experiences while studying abroad this Spring 2019 semester at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia:
"Colombia is a country full of happiness, diversity, peace, friendship, and freedom. Although I have only been here for a little more than two months, I feel included and part of the family. The environment is very lively, upbeat, and calm. Specifically, in Barranquilla, the culture reflects the history of immigrants that came from all over the world (Africa, Germany, Venezuela, etc). Every year, in the beginning of March, there is a grand celebration called Carnaval that takes place for 4 days and it is a representation of the mix of cultures and time to come together with friends and family to appreciate traditions. The celebration includes parades, dances, and a variety of costumes that represent different figures of the past in a satirical, comical way. The community is always moving forward and looking for ways to advance and develop without losing traditions of the past. Every day here is full of “pura alegría”(pure happiness) and smiles. There isn’t a lot of stress or pressure to act or dress a certain way; everyone has their own style and is appreciated as they are. In moments of distress, the people are patient and follow the attitude of “cógela suave”, (keep calm). Colombia is where the coffee is a rich as the culture and a place where one can truly be content."
Bon Voyage Olivia! We look forward to hearing more about your adventures when you get back!
