Welcome Dr. Javier Alvarez-Jaimes, new Assistant Professor of Spanish!
The Department of Languages, Cultures, and Humanities welcomes Dr. Javier Alvarez-Jaimes this Fall 2017!
Dr. Alvarez has a Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies from the University of British Columbia and has most recently taught at the University of Georgia. During the last eight years, he has developed and taught a variety of courses ranging from elementary language to advanced courses on Latin American literature and culture both in the United States and in Canada. As an educator, he seeks to motivate his students to develop communicative and trans-cultural skills while stimulating their ability to think critically and reflectively.
As a scholar of Latin American literature and culture, he believes teaching and research can be integrated; incorporating personal research on Latin American cultural, literary and political history by providing course readings focused on struggle and social movements. Currently, his interdisciplinary research brings together historic, economic, geographic, sociologic and artistic perspectives to explore the representation of spatial marginality in late-twentieth and early twenty-first-century narratives—such as those of independent chronicles, media outlets, and vernacular hip-hop. He has already begun to produce articles about findings from my doctoral dissertation for publication.
Be sure to say hello!
