He obtained his BA in the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. In the past seven years, Bolaños has been writing comic book scripts, and his stories have been published both in print and digitally. He completed his MA in Spanish at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, where he wrote a thesis on failure and sexual frustration in the short stories of Julio Ramón Ribeyro.
